While it now seems like a certain path, Merci New York started as a bright spark of an idea that quickly caught way into a delightful passion. A passion for all things chic, polished, beautiful, breathtaking and ultimately- all things wedding. When the 21-year-old-me first returned to New York with journalism and graphic design degrees in hand, I was intent on starting my career in the fashion industry and would begin a passionate whirlwind of a spiel to anyone who would listen. Luckily, my energetic naïveté must have been charismatic; I soon found myself living in the West Village working as a design assistant for an established fashion company.
As time progressed, I landed more experienced roles and learned all the ropes of the fashion industry: how to develop strong client and vendor relationships, effectively manage large-scale corporate events, party like a rockstar (did I say that?!) and contribute to the design of some truly fabulous product.
And then, one pretty May afternoon in Central Park, I got engaged to my college sweetheart. We took the plunge and did what many a soon-to-be-married New Yorker does (i.e. move above 14th Street) and began dreaming about our big day.
The thing about planning a wedding is that there is no set road map; the planning takes on your personality, strengths and passions, and you go about the process as you would your job because those are the processes you know and feel comfortable with. So, whether I meant to or not, I instinctively thought of our wedding as my own couture "line"...
I cut fabric swatches from our design room, pulled Pantone chips for color inspiration, and waxed poetic with my creative agency about niche-y topics like calligraphic font faces. I scoured the garment district with DIY projects in mind, and scouted out a divine pair of Valentino blush satin d’orsay heels that were published in MS Weddings, yet existed only as a one-off sample in the Valentino closet {I also have great friends}.
Ultimately, I fell in love with wedding planning. My love of fashion, graphic design and chic New York style had found a common home.
After our wedding I began helping engaged girlfriends plan their big day with the same fashion-infused techniques I used. I found myself at work events suggesting great vendors and stylistic ideas to future-brides. I became immersed in scouting out all things beautiful in New York and beyond. My husband and friends joked about how I was becoming just as passionate about other people’s weddings as my own… And slowly, a spark was ignited…
